President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump honored members of the armed forces, thanking them for their sacrifice and service during the Salute to Our Armed Services Ball at the National Building Museum here last night. “I want to thank you on behalf of Melania, myself, the family and the millions of people all over the world,” Trump said. “The job you’ve done is absolutely incredible, absolutely incredible.” Trump said he enjoyed receiving congratulations from the service members in Afghanistan. “You are the nicest people,” he said. “Thank you very much. I’m with you all the way. You have somebody that’s going to be right alongside you. We’re going to do it together. Honestly, not only the support you’ve given me, but the courage you show is incredible, and it’s going to be appreciated. It’s going to be appreciated more than ever before.

Mr. Trump arrived at the Freedom Ball and greeted the crowd with “Howdy folks” and a few more well-worn remarks. His supporters, it seems, think he should keep his personal Twitter account. “Should I keep the Twitter going or not?” the president asked. The crowd said yes. “The enemies keep saying, ‘Oh, that’s terrible,’” Mr. Trump said, “but it’s a way of bypassing dishonest media, right? If the opening dance at the Freedom Ball looked a lot like what happened at the Liberty Ball, that’s because it was about exactly the same. After what seemed like a momentary audio glitch, “My Way” was back on the sound system.

President Trump on Friday signed an executive order directing federal agencies to “ease the burden of ObamaCare." Trump signed the order in front of reporters at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, one of his first official acts as president. The order did not direct any specific actions, instead giving broad authority to the Department of Health and Human Services and other agencies to take actions available to them under the law to ease regulatory requirements from ObamaCare. It pushes agencies to target provisions that impose a "fiscal burden" on a state or a "cost" or "regulatory burden" on individuals or businesses. It is not clear what practical effects will come from the order.

When President-elect Donald Trump and the nation’s new first family walk into the White House following the inauguration ceremony, they will not have a clue as to the mass transformation that just took place. In the five hours since President Obama and his family vacated their White House home, nothing short of magic will have taken place to erect the new Trump residence. President Trump’s suits will be hanging in his closet and all the rugs and furniture Melania decided on for the first family’s wing of the White House will be in place. This will all be done in a five-hour sprint between the Obama family moving out and the Trump family moving in.

Inaugural Parade

WATCH THE FULL CONFERENCE HERE

BY NEW YORK TIMES

Donald J. Trump continued an inaugural tradition after he was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States. With his wife, Melania Trump, at his side, he stepped out of their limousine and took a brief stroll along Pennsylvania Avenue on Friday to wave at crowds during the inaugural parade. The walk has been an informal custom since 1977, when President Jimmy Carter became the first to set out by foot for more than a mile on the route to the White House. “Once somebody does something innovative, it becomes a tradition,” Doris Kearns Goodwin, a presidential historian, said during a telephone interview. “There is a desire to show that they are a people’s president, and in that moment of a ceremony, when so many people are gathered to watch, they want the people to feel they are going to be part of it.” The decision whether to walk during the parade is apparently left to the new president, presumably with input from the Secret Service and other advisers.

President Donald Trump took a moment to recognize Hillary Clinton with a standing ovation during his Inaugural luncheon Friday afternoon. Trump urged the crowd to stand up to recognized the Clintons, and, after a few moments of applause, said he has “a lot of respect” for the former president and first lady. He ended his Inaugural luncheon speech by saying the next four years would be filled with “peace and prosperity.” The President said. “Whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, it doesn’t matter, we’re all going to get along.”

President Donald Trump quickly assumed the mantle of the White House and began setting up his new administration on Friday, signing a bill that allows retired Gen. James Mattis to serve as his defense secretary, as well as the nomination papers for his other Cabinet choices. Less than an hour after delivering a stinging rebuke of the political status quo in his inaugural address, Trump sat in an ornate room steps from the Senate floor to officially assemble his core team. Flanked by Vice President Mike Pence and congressional leaders, he praised each of his nominees as he signed the papers and handed out the pens he was using. He also engaged in banter with his new congressional rivals, including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California. Trump also signed a proclamation declaring a national day of patriotism, according to a tweet from White House spokesman Sean Spicer.
